Imagine powering your devices with your body motion.

Researchers at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea have developed an energy-harvesting device that converts body movements into electricity.

And it does so with 280 times greater efficiency than existing stretchable piezoelectric devices.

Utilizing the piezoelectric effect, where materials generate an electric charge under mechanical stress, this innovation could revolutionize wearable technology. The key advancement lies in a novel three-dimensional structure that allows the use of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) — a powerful but traditionally rigid material — while maintaining flexibility and comfort.

Additionally, a newly designed "curvature-specific coupling electrode" ensures that all generated energy is effectively captured, significantly boosting efficiency.

This cutting-edge technology paves the way for self-powered wearable devices, potentially eliminating the need for frequent battery charging in smartwatches, fitness trackers, and medical sensors.

By overcoming the limitations of conventional piezoelectric materials, DGIST’s breakthrough brings us closer to a future where wearable electronics can generate their own power simply through natural body movements. Further research will focus on refining the device for commercial use and expanding its potential across multiple industries. This advancement marks a significant step toward more sustainable and convenient energy solutions in wearable tech.
